CCACC ACADEMY

Our Afterschool Curricula

Strictly following the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) schedule, our Afterschool program delivers over 22 courses throughout the week under the subjects of STEM, Leadership, Art, Chinese, Movement, Multi-Interest and Academics. The following are selected courses:

Leadership Program

Leadership program expands the capacity of students to practice and develop essential skills to become future leaders. Students will explore the principles and practice the skills and strategies of effective communications, especially focused on public speaking and debate stage by stage, develop confidence and critical thinking abilities, improve decision making and time management skills, and learn to develop individual and group leadership skills to impact their lives and their communities. In our Public Speaking class, we encourage students to participate in a warm atmosphere and present on the stage, foster students’ confidence and intonation from beginning,  develop the foundation of communication skills, encourage students to express themselves with vivid presentation and story sharing skills, prepare students for debate and mock competition. Practice makes perfect – Public Speaking is a Skill, not a talent.

Elements of the 2D Art Program

Elements of the 2D Art program is the prerequisite to any drawing and painting classes we have at our Afterschool program. In this class students will learn the basics of visual creation, which includes but is not limited to the elements of principles of art and design (line, shape, color, form, pattern, etc.), proper use of traditional art materials (pencil, paint, pastel, etc.), and creative expression, how the students visually display their thoughts and feelings. Through various lessons that include both practice and art history, students will gain appreciation and skills necessary for future art exploration.

Drawing & Painting Intermediate program

Drawing & Painting Intermediate program is a great course for any student who has already taken fundamentals and basic drawing and painting courses and admire traditional art historical pieces and contemporary making methods. This class is a more advanced approach to drawing & painting that involves observation, planning, and developed art making techniques. Each session will include an art history segment and analysis of historically significant artworks.

Math program

Our Afterschool math curriculum system was designed after repeated deliberation and careful research by a group of math researchers and professional teachers. Our courses aim to meet the needs of students for mathematical cognitive ability and lay a solid foundation for their studies at secondary school.

  • Math Kangaroo program is set for one year. During the 40 lessons, the teacher will lead the children to learn the exam questions of the past 20 years through homework, lectures, classroom tests, knowledge extension, etc. CCACC Academy is also the largest Math Kangaroo testing center in Maryland.
  • Math Olympiads program is set for one year, and the textbook is Math Olympiad Contest Problems for Elementary and Middle Schools along with the exam questions of the last few years. The curriculum is set in the form of children doing questions together, teachers explaining the questions and extending students’ knowledge. For children in grades 4-5, we also provide the Math Olympiads Team training courses.

Chinese Language program

There are two tracks of Chinese courses provided for students with different backgrounds at our Afterschool program. Both of them are taught by leading professional instructors and language experts, who have long-time experience working with youth. Weekly communications, homework assistance and formative assessments are provided.

  • MLP Chinese We have adopted the Ma LiPing (MLP) Chinese curriculum, which  is best for children who are already fluent in Mandarin Chinese in that it is the heritage language of their family. Students are taught the most common characters used in the Chinese language (for reading books, newspapers, etc.). Through this curriculum, students are expected to know 1,500 of the most frequent words used in general Chinese books by 4th grade. In the 5th grade, students learn how to input Chinese via computer. And by the end of 10th grade, students are exposed to 2,794 characters.
  • Chinese for Students with Non-Heritage Background For non-heritage students who have no family background in Chinese oral input, this specific Chinese course is aimed at helping American children learn Chinese language from the beginning, to develop language proficiency following the sequential curriculum and acquire an understanding and appreciation of the richness of Chinese culture, to help stimulate a positive interest in second language learning among Cathay students. The curriculum is based on Yes! Chinese and Chinese Paradise, with adoption for local students following the Universal Design for learning and Communicative Language Teaching Pedagogy.  It aligns well with the Language Proficiency Standard developed by American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), and well fits into the Standard Chinese Assessment of YCT and HSK, aims to make all the students achieve the World-readiness goals for learning languages as 5C (Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, Communities) set by the National Standards for Foreign Language Education.
